Is AMD selling the Xbox Series X APU to PC builders?

AMD has now listed the AMD 4700S 8-Core Processor Desktop Kit. This seems like it is based on the Xbox Series X APU. So can PC builders buy Xbox Series X hardware and use it for a PC?

  1. I think Linus and some other Tech reviewers did the similar Xbox Series S SoC board with the A10 APU graphics. The main issue was lack of proper driver support. As well as the Jaguar APU/CPU was based on the FX bulldozer so the IPC was terrible.

AMD releasing this at this time is a bad idea and there is still a GPU shortage out there. And this kit still needs a dGPU is a joke

    1. Yeah I’m having trouble figuring out what this would be good for unless the price is really low. It has a small form factor and comes with CPU, RAM, and cooler, but seems to be very limited it other ways. I guess. If the price was right it could fit certain uses.

  2. Seems like an office type/asthetic build. Not for triple AAA games even with GPU but it’s very meh at best. Still if your a student on a tight budget and you just want the bare basics …. Well maybe yea price depending! Have a coffee ☕ Dan

  3. I’d assume they more than likely couldn’t sell it the way it is for obvious reasons but how awesome would it be if AMD also offered high end gaming apu’s, after all they are capable of designing and manufacturing them. I can understand the ram being an issue but perhaps they could partner with motherboard manufacturers and have them produce motherboards with gddr6 ram soldered onto the board. 16gb/32gb variants. You know there’s a market for it.

    1. I’d love to basically get the system in my video, but with the APU actually functional. Even better if it was Zen 3. It would be cool to run direct tests VS consoles as well to show how well optimized games are for console hardware.

  4. Since these CPU cores connect to GDDR6 and not the typical DDR4 someone should benchmark 4700S CPU performance. Going back to the XO/PS4 CPU perf comparisons there has always been discussion about how much of an impact PS4’s GDDR5 has on CPU performance vs XO’s DDR3 (some say there is additional latency). Its 1 RAM generation later and its GDDR6 vs DDR4, but the comparisons should still be somewhat relevant. Now we finally have an opportunity to test it out.

    1. @Daniel Owen I’ve only seen them on Aliex, so probably for Chinese market? Something for factories to finally upgrade ancient hardware inside manufacturing machinery?

  5. it reminds me to an intel NUC, but without an M» slot and phisically no iGPU. Someone could use it as a little streaming machine at home or a little PC to manage a NAS or even as a office PC attached to the back of a monitor.

    1. @Daniel Owen that is also true but my main point in general was mainly about those cards as not being that bad(except the 550,560,1030,1050).

  6. It’s not worth $318 when there’s no GPU options or upgrade path. Also, a i5-11500 runs for 239.99 and it has single threaded performance kills this CPU at 1670 points vs 1000 and it closely matches the multi-threaded performance at 8260 vs 8580 with 2 less cores. AMD needs to sweeten the pot and get at least a 40CU version of the GPU working for a little extra.

  7. Some applications are very sensitive to memory bandwidth, if this thing comes with GDDR6 it could put up some very impressive numbers for the right workloads. Think databases, rendering, compiling, etc. The one downside is the lack of high-speed IO, there is only one PCIe slot. You would have to get a PLX card and several cabled PCie adapter kits to add stuff like 10gbit networking, NVME storage, etc. And even then it would top out at only 2GB/sec.

  8. You actually can’t make a PC out of the Xbox APU. It requires a proprietary PCB design to work. One of the key differentiators is the fact that the Xbox APU uses unified GDDR6 RAM throughout the system, so it’s shared between the CPU and GPU. This is different from AMD’s PC specific solution: smart access memory.
